Will Low Cost Health Insurance Be Detrimental?
I think a better way to phrase this question would be as follows: “How could anyone think low cost health insurance would be detrimental?” I say that, of course, with all due credit to those educated scholars out there who believe affordable health insurance equates to horrible coverage for all those with the insurance. That is a risk we must acknowledge during a time when our nation’s people are taking drastic steps to achieve low cost insurance. However, when you take a look around at all the low-income people in our nation who are both uninsured and underinsured, and then get a letter in the mail from your health insurance company explaining that your premium went up because of the people who can’t afford good coverage insurance, or any at all - it’s extremely difficult to ignore the conundrum.
This ongoing riddle of healthcare has baffled us all for ages, and until we admit we all need to take responsibility for those around us, the puzzle will go unsolved. The fact of the matter is once members of Congress sit down with people who live on the other side of the proverbial income tracks, and really hear, learn, and understand the “no matter how many hours I work, I can’t afford medicine for my baby” concept, we will all suffer. Premiums will go up, coverage will go down; the healthy, well-insured population will diminish, and the sickly, un- and underinsured population will grow ferociously.
Will lost cost health insurance be detrimental? No, no, you’ve got it all wrong. Low cost health insurance is the only way to keep our country healthy, and our healthcare industry afloat.
